Today I’m going to Critique a health and safety policy of Doha British School in order to ensure it is compliance with international health and safety management system standards. There are five features must be included in order to have good health and safety policy such as :
1-policy statement of intent
2- setting health and safety objective
3-organization of health and safety
4-arrangements for health and safety
5- review of health and safety

Firstly, the statement of policy must contain the aims and objectives of any organization and should be written in clear and simple language so that it easy to understand. For example, I found in the policy that the statement provides the aim of Doha British school which is they are responsible to ensure the health, safety, and wellbeing of school staff, pupils in school and on off-site visits. Also, they are aiming to promote a healthy environment in the workplace by controlling the risks and hazards in the workplace. Furthermore, the policy fairly broke down the statement into bullets and explained very well and the policy wasn’t signed by the most senior person in the organization but it was dated June 2016. The health and safety performance targets are important parts in the statement of policy, for example, reduce in the number of accident and level of the sickness. Also specific improvement in the health and safety audit and improve communication throughout the school. Overall it was a good policy statement for Doha British school policy.

secondly, setting health and safety objective is an important part of the policy in order to guide the organization and objective must set out for a specific time period and the objective must comply with minimum legal standards. Also, the objective should be SMART which stands for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time framed. it is important to prioritize the targets which are also known as key performance indicators (KPIs). Furthermore, Benchmarking compares the performance of the organization with a similar organization which helps with continuous improvement and it becomes easier to identify the key performance indicators in the organization. For example, in British Doha school policy they aiming to provide an environment that promotes a healthy lifestyle and control risks and hazards in the school.

thirdly, the organization of health and safety this important section of policy which defines the names, positions, and duties of those within the organization and who have responsibility for health and safety in the workplace. Also, it must show the reporting lines through the management structure within the organization and it’s necessary for each individual in the organization to know their responsibilities and duties in the workplace. For example, in the British Doha school policy, they mentioned the roles and responsibilities for each staff in the school and with details explaining each one duty in the workplace.

fourth, arrangements for the health and safety of policy this section gives details of the specific systems and procedures used to assist in the implementing of the policy statement. Also, the arrangements must include health and safety rules and procedures. Moreover, it is necessary to have arrangements for fire and other emergency plans in the policy in case accidents happen in the workplace. For example, in the British Doha school policy, they mentioned emergency procedures, fire prevention and how to control substances hazardous to the health.

lastly, review of the health and safety policy, it is a crucial part of the policy to reviewed and monitored on a regular basis in the workplace. There are so many reasons why the need to review health and safety policy, for instance, to see if there are any changes may have taken place, new work methods have been introduced and advised by an insurance company to make a change. Also, it helps to achieve personal development and minimize financial losses in the organization. For example, in the British Doha school policy, they mentioned they aiming to monitor and review the implementation of the Health and Safety Policy. overall, it was a good health and safety policy.
